Apartment world; KOREA

When people mention about Korean cities, Korea is often called “apartment world.” In the early twenty century, having a new apartment as their possession is one of the biggest dreams. All the construction companies in Korea built millions of apartments with minimum effort and maximum profits. This phenomenon made Korean housing buildings look quite similar to each other. In this project, my team try to propose new apartment complex as an assignment.

The given site in Yong-in, Korea, has an excellent natural condition where locates between a small mountain and stream with beautiful scenery. However, the apartment on the site seems to be isolated. The outside space of the site, I found in my research, mostly empty. During day and night, it is hard to see people except for cars. There is no such an atmosphere to communicate with neighbours and friends outside of the houses.

Life pattern of people has rapidly changed as fast as our society developed. Regarding this, people’s demand for residential space is challenging not only kitchen and rooms but also they want useful exterior space and community. I believe that apartment complex should be open to their surrounding environment by knocking down an enclosure. In this point of views, I propose connecting dwelling space and the exterior space carefully. The yard, starting from a house, is the main stage for communication with social life. All the action on the yard gives you have a chance to interact with diverse circumstance. “Alpha space” from the residential space would give even more opportunity for interaction. Alpha space has an ambiguous traits that this space is a part of the dwelling area but partly open to the public. This unclear trait will cause a variety of actions.
